Education in El Paso is the largest single employer in the city with government jobs running a close second. Both the El Paso Independent School District and the Ysleta Independent School District hire more people than any private entity. The University of Texas at El Paso, Socorro Independent School District and the El Paso Community College also contribute significantly to the economic stability of the area. Fort Bliss civilian employees accounts for the second-largest employment opportunity in El Paso, with city and county governments combining to round out the majority of the top ten employers.

Traditional Mexican food ? from tacos and refried beans to margaritas ? are the staples of this border town. Naturally, the proximity to Mexico plays an important role in the city?s restaurants and visitors spend countless dollars sampling the native fare. But it?s not all about Mexico, even in this metropolitan area that reaches on both sides of the border.

You?ll find plenty of options for fine dining, fast foods and other cultural eating places. Pizza, Chinese and other ethnic restaurants are available, as are some of the more traditional ?western? foods ? hearty steak and eggs. While you?re probably not going to visit El Paso without sampling some of the Mexican food being offered, you aren?t going to be forced to eat tortillas during your entire visit.

Housing in El Paso is typically adequate for the number of people seeking houses, but there?s not a great number of units for sale at any given time. According to information from area real estate agents, the number of rental units available is typical of the rest of the United States.

The El Paso Housing Authority plays an important role in providing housing for the poorer residents of the area. The proximity to the Mexican border also impacts the housing situation, giving many people the option of whether to live in Mexico or the US, and the option to work in the other country.
